This workshop is designed to help participants understand the Social Security Administration’s disability programs. It will include detailed information about Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), as well as the criteria used to determine if an applicant qualifies for disability benefits. Participants will learn what to expect during the application and appeals process, including information about which tools and documentation strengthen a disability case.

Attorney Billie J. Guthrie will facilitate the workshop. She graduated from North Carolina Central University School of Law evening program in 2011. Guthrie is admitted to the Massachusetts Bar, and is pending admission to the North Carolina Bar. She has been practicing Social Security disability law since 2013, and is currently expanding her legal practice to include guardianship proceedings. Prior to becoming an attorney, Billie was a social worker for nearly ten years, and has extensive experience working with persons with mental illness, as well as the public mental health system. She has a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Guthrie currently serves on the Board of Directors for Threshold Clubhouse, a psychiatric rehabilitation program in Durham.
